Southern Africa – Together we can do it!

[Deutsch]

At the beginning of the 1990s, Southern Africa found itself in the middle of public interest. The region lived through a wave of democratisation. Namibia became independent. The apartheid conflict in South Africa created worldwide publicity, even more so did its overcoming, when Nelson Mandela became the first elected president of all South Africans. Since then, Southern Africa has only been in the news every now and then, when land reform threats the property of white farmers, when there are reports about AIDS, poverty or crime. But increasingly a more positive view prevails: of free elections in almost every country of the region, of economic development, of self-developed approaches for tackling existing problems and of attractive tourist destinations that secure the livelihoods of many.

INISA wants to reflect the variety of the region by raising critical questions while at the same time highlighting positive developments. Each of the 14 countries of Southern Africa tells its own story – which is worth looking into.

INISA – About us

On February, 10th 1995, shortly after the birth of the new South Africa, INISA has been founded. The purpose of our work is to inform the German public about political, economic, social and cultural developments in Southern Africa. We draw attention to the region. We work for increased and strengthened relations between Germany and Southern Africa.

Our members are experts, scientists, students and people from Germany or Africa who demonstrate their commitment to Southern Africa in various ways. INISA is an independent non-governmental organisation. We work in a non-partisan manner. All active participants are volunteers, and our association is recognised as a non-profit organisation.

By means of our mailing lists subscribers are informed about upcoming events. The INISA-newsletter “Umbiki” reports periodically about the activities of the NGO and its members. Updates on the progress achieved by our scholarship holders arer also provided regularly.

INISA is directed by a young and ambitious board. Its members are active in one or more of the following fields:

Activities on political, economic, social and cultural issues, such as weekend seminars, public discussions, and cultural events („Veranstaltungen“)

Promotion of public and academic debate on Southern Africa („Wiss. Arbeit“)

Scholarships for young students from Sothern Africa („Stipendium“)
